NRN PARTNER: Francesfield Farm

FRANCESFIELD FARM

Location:
Logiealmond, Tayside
Area Committed:
50 acres

Francesfield is a mixed farm that that occupies high ground overlooking the river Almond in highland Perthshire. Bounded by fast flowing burns to north and south, the landholding features different habitats types and provides real opportunity to increase natural complexity and wildlife abundance.

Key rewilding commitments:

  • MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Undertake native woodland creation in suitable areas across the farm.
  • MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Exploring opportunities to install wetland features such as scrapes, ponds and flushes for the benefit of aquatic invertebrates and other wildlife.
  • WILDER RIVERS: Seek opportunities for riparian tree planting, to increase shade and keep watercourses cool for the benefit of fish.
  • JOINED UP HABITATS: Reinstate lost hawthorn and blackthorn hedgerows (or wild tree corridors) between ancient trees and along field margins for the benefit of wildlife.
  • RETURN MISSING SPECIES: Ensure woodland planting includes rare or missing native tree species.
  • CONNECTING WITH COMMUNITIES: Explore setting-up a horticulture-based community enterprise.

'Our family has farmed this land for over 140 years. We are keen to demonstrate that farming and nature recovery are entirely compatible. This landholding will continue as sanctuary for nature, a place where wildlife can thrive and spread out.'
